I became interested in bouviers after meeting my first on during the summer of 1985. I was working as a veterinary technician, when a beautiful big male calmly entered our clinic. He was quite the gentleman, very stately. I was instantly enamored by his demeanor, after dealing with hyperactive dog breeds on a regular basis. I began to research the breed, attending dog shows and meeting with breeders. After a year and a half, I brought my own bouvier companion home, “Grizz”, a.k.a. Blackstone’s Chevalier Gris. Grizz was my constant companion, accompanying me to the vet school at night to study, going to handling and obedience classes, and competing in shows. After much trial and error, Grizz and I achieved his AKC championship.
I later added additional bouviers, to continue to show, and to jump into the world of raising bouviers. Initially, I called my kennel “Bluemoon Bouviers”, because I rarely bred, but later we changed it to Legacy Bouviers. We have continued to work to achieve championships on our dogs, and have also had fun as well, with herding training.
My goal has always been to strive for excellence in health and temperament. While I have indeed have had dogs achieve Championships, and Grand Champion, as well as serving individuals as service dogs, it is far more important to do all I can to produce healthy family members. I have worked hard to avoid the genetic disease that commonly afflict bouviers, including hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, subvalvular aortic stenosis (SAS), and primary glaucoma. My breeding dogs are screened for all these diseases, with PennHIP and/or OFA hips, OFA elbows, boarded cardiologist exams for heart diseases for OFA cardiac, and ophthalmologist performed eye exams (including gonioscopy for evaluation of the drainage angle of the eye for the predisposition to primary glaucoma) for the OFA eye certification. OFA cardiac and OFA eye exams are repeated periodically through the life of my dogs. I welcome inquiries and discussions regarding these tests, and will provide verification for all testing.
I work hard to help the social and behavioral development of my puppies after whelping, and temperament test the puppies to determine the best personality fit between puppy and potential families. When you purchase your bouvier family member from me, I will do all I can to support you, including training advise, answering health questions, etc.
